Learn French Online

Featured

There are many different methods to learn French online, but whichever way you take remember that you’re going to need a combination of the four main skills: writing, reading, speaking and listening.

The best way to learn French is by going to a French school, especially if you can go to one in France.

If you can’t get to a French school though, then you will have to learn French online.  Thanks to recent advances in technology, learning French online is now almost as good as learning French in France!

How’s that?

Most online French courses will give you practice in writing, reading and listening, but won’t actually help you to SPEAK.

And this is what you want to do, right?  Speak French!

That’s where skype comes in.  You’ve probably used skype to talk with friends or family.  Well, now you can use this totally free program to connect with a French teacher anywhere in the world.

What I’d recommend you do first is purchase an online French course, so that way you can practice all the grammar rules and the vocabulary.  This is usually just a matter of memorisation, so it’s best to do it in your own time.

And then go and find yourself a skype French teacher who you can actually practice with.  French teachers are expensive, so learning all the grammar rules first with a cheap online course will end up saving you a lot of money.

Conjugating Verbs in French:

If you’re a native English speaker one of the hardest things to get used to is the conjugation of verbs.  In English we don’t conjugate many verbs, but in French all of them are conjugated.

To conjugate a verb means to change its ending based on either the tense or the person we’re talking about.  For example, we say I walk but she walks.  So for he/she/it in English we put an S on the end of the verb.

In French, you have to change the ending for every single person.

Also, we conjugate based on tense.  In the present we say I walk, but in the past we say I walked.  This is the same in French but instead of having just one form of the past (walked) there are many different forms – one for each person.

For example, the verb to walk in French is Promener.  For every tense and every pronoun, there is a different form:

Present Future Imperfect  Present participle
je promène promènerai promenais  promenant
tu promènes promèneras promenais
il promène promènera promenait  Passé composé
nous promenons promènerons promenions    Auxiliary verb avoir
vous promenez promènerez promeniez    Past participle promené
ils promènent promèneront promenaient
Subjunctive Conditional Passé simple  Imperfect subjunctive
je promène promènerais promenai  promenasse
tu promènes promènerais promenas  promenasses
il promène promènerait promena  promenât
nous promenions promènerions promenâmes  promenassions
vous promeniez promèneriez promenâtes  promenassiez
ils promènent promèneraient promenèrent  promenassent
Imperative
(tu) promène Verb conjugation pattern
Promener is a stem-changing verb
(nous) promenons
(vous) promenez

French Lessons Online – vocabulary tips

Featured

If you are going to learn French online, then one of the first things you’ll want to study is vocabulary.

A great way to learn more words in French is by making up a whole pile of small cards, about 10cm by 5cm, and writing the French word on one side and the English word on the other.  Do this for about 100 words.

Now, go through the cards one at a time.  If you are looking at the French word, try to remember the English translation (you can check on the back for the correct answer!) and vice versa.

Once you’ve got it down, and can translate either way, from the French to the English or back again, then you can take the card out of your pack.

You can actually do the same thing for whole sentences.  Write a sentence and put the translation on the back.

To learn French online you will need a good memory!  Learning a new language is all about memorizing new words and grammar structures.

Travelling to the US.

Next week I’m going to go travelling to the US.  I’m visiting a number of places: New York, San Francisco, and finally a visit to the Smoky mountains.  I’ve always wanted to see a bear so hopefully this will be my big chance!  While I’m in San Francisco I’m going to go and do a bit of work at the Sierra Club.  Then when I’m in the smoky mountains I’m going to go and stay in Helen.    It should be a great trip!  I’ll let you know how I go when I get back.  Not too much chance to practice my French unfortunately, but nevermind!

Travel from Australia to Paris

Travelling to Paris from Australia Australians are in love with France! From the accent, to the food, to the undeniable French-chic, holidays in Paris have never been more popular. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Australia to Paris at the moment. The cheapest flights from Australia to Paris pass through China, laying over in either Shanghai or Guangzhou. China Eastern, and China Southern both offer flights from Australia through to Paris. You can also take a low cost carrier like Jetstar to Guangzhou and then swap over to Air France for a more comfortable (though more expensive) flight into Paris. If you would prefer a Middle East stopover, V Australia flys to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and then on to Paris.
